For the entirety of my computing life(a little over 10 years now) I have never used anything more than a cheap 2 button optical mouse. Then about 4 months ago I bought an iMac. It came with their not so new anymore Mighty Mouse. After 4 months of using the Mighty Mouse I think it is the worst Apple product I have ever come across. I found myself wanting my cheap 2 button mouse again! I never bought into the $50-100 mice. I figured they don’t really point or click any better. I stumbled across a review of the Logitech MX Revolution at http://paulstamatiou.com and thought I might have found a reason to spend more than $10 on a mouse. This thing has 12 configurable buttons. That’s right, 12! That includes two regular buttons, a 5 way scroll wheel, a ‘quick search’ button, a back and forward button, and a 3 way toggle wheel.

That’s my setup so far. I’ve only had it for a few hours though, after a few days I might change some things if they don’t work out. Here are some details on what all those mean.

Normal left click

Normal right click

Standard scroll wheel with velocity free wheel

Middle click on scroll wheel, configured to open the application switcher( command + tab )

Tilt left on scroll wheel, set to scroll horizontally to the left

Tilt right on scroll wheel, set to scroll horizontally to the right

Back button by thumb, configured to firefox back key combo ( command + back arrow )

Forward button by thumb, configured to firefox forward key combo( command + forward arrow )

Logitech One Touch Search button, configured to toggle dashboard

Thumb wheel toggle forward, configured to show desktop via expose

Thumb wheel toggle backward, configured to show all windows via expose

Thumb wheel toggle click, configured to start a skitch crosshair snapshot ( shift + command + 5 )

A few things might not make sense, for example the velocity scroll wheel. The logitech software allows you to configure the scroll wheel so that at a certain speed it unlocks the ratcheting mechanism and spins freely, making for very fast scrolling. The horizontal scrolling will probably be removed once I figure out what to put in place of them. I never used it on my mighty mouse either. The thumb toggle wheel might not make sense either. It’s shaped like a scroll wheel, but it does not scroll at all. You can push it forward a little and have it pop back, or you can push it back a little and it will pop back. It also appears to have two different thresholds of activation. If I start pushing it backwards, it will show all my windows, and I can mouse to one, and then release the wheel and it will deactivate expose with the selected window active. I can also push the button all the way back and let it go, activating expose until I perform another action. Make it very easy to get a quick look at the desktop or switch windows quickly. The last thing I want to talk about is the skitch crosshair snapshop. If you’re not familiar with skitch it’s a screenshot utility that lets you upload straight to flickr( or other photo sharing sites ) after taking it. When I click that button it opens two cross hairs which I can use to select an area and take a screen shot. I can also left click on any window to grab just that window, or right click anywhere to grab the entire desktop. So I now have one click access to any type of screen shot I want to take without even having to think about it. In short, I am in love with this mouse and I highly recommend it to anyone with a computer.

I just cleared 40+ spam comments and trackbacks that made it through akismet and onto my site. The ratio is pretty good as akismet caught over 4000 of them. Shortly thereafter [Kristin](http://wiphey.com) wrote an HTML progress bar for all to use. I immediately had the idea to turn it into a plugin for everyone to use. I have been using it, in some form, on this site for wuite some time now. I have been pretty lazy about finishing it though. I got bored the other night and just knocked the rest of it out. It will track progress beween two whole or negative(no floating point) numbers up or down. It’s pretty basic right now but I have a few things in mind to add as well. You can download the plugin [here](http://irgeek.net/projects/progress-bar/). Widget coming soon!

For the record, I love Apple. I have been waiting with patience for a while for the ‘iPhone’, all the rumors aside, it was an obvious move for them and it was bound to happen. On Tuesday I watched the keynote, and was in utter joy with everything the iPhone could do. After a good 24 hours of giddy-ness I was able to calm down, realize that no one touched on what the phone couldn’t do, so I looked into it and found out some things I really don’t like.

No third party apps

Now this is a real show stopper here. What good is having a phone that runs OS X if I can’t run Adium or Newsfire. Now, I don’t expect these app’s to work out fo the box, that is asking to much. But they should be able to scale down and port these applications for the iPhone. I see a huge market for third party developers on this platform, and can’t think of a reason Apple wouldn’t want that around. It brings more people to the platform, especially current Mac owners. Confirmed by Apple VP

EDGE Data Transfer

Now this is something I can live with, but would prefer not to. For those not-in-the-know about all the different wireless data transfer acronyms. EDGE is basically the DSL of wireless data where EVDO and 3G are the cable internet(GPRS is the dial-up). EDGE gets a realistic 70kbps download speed on average. Even this site would take a while to download on that kind of speed. Now, my opinion has always been that if I am doing the web surfing on my phone, it’s because I need to look up something specific and waiting for it is not an issue, but if you are going to make a state of the art phone and tout the greatest technology including “200+ new patents” … you should use the highest wireless data transfer technology available! I am surprised Cingular signed on to the deal without any 3G data. Cingular has been pushing 3G majorly and wants to get all their customers onto 3G phones within the next couple of years.

GPS

Where is the GPS? Jobs touted Google Maps as one of the killer apps of the phone, why can it not tell where I am at and give me directions, or local attractions. I can pinch a digital image to a smaller size, but I have to tell the phone where I am at? Bad form Apple.

Battery Life

Now this one is more confusing than aggrivating to be honest. The “iPhone technical specs page”(which doesn’t have anything terribly technical on it) says that the phone has “Up to 5 hours of talk/video/browse” and “Up to 16 hours Audio playback.” Now … does this mean that one battery can last 5 hours of solid talking OR 16 hours of solid playback? Or is it how Kevin Rose said it would be last month on Diggnation with one battery dedicated to Audio playback that lasts 16 hours, and another battery for everything else that lasts 5 hours? Also, why is there no standby battery life listed?

Syncing

Apple put Wi-Fi(a/b/g[/n?]) and Bluetooth 2.0 EDR in their phone. Good job Apple! They did something right with the phone part of their phone! Oh … but wait … you can’t use either of them to sync your iPhone with your computer, you have to dock it. I personally don’t see a reason for Bluetooth 2.0 EDR when the only thing you can use it for is a wireless headset, a lesser version of bluetooth would have been fine(and might have dropped the hefty pricetag a bit).

IM

I know the text messaging looks a lot like IM, and you can AIM over SMS. But where is the true, honest to goodness, text messaging? iChat anyone? I’m not a huge fan, and there are better alternatives on the Mac, but for mobile IM, iChat would do just fine. What I really want? Adium on my iPhone. AIM, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, GoogleTalk(Jabber). All of them done right with a pretty interface.

Cingular

I am not a huge fan of cingular. Thier plans are overpriced and they use Rollover to justify it, when in reality, I would hardly, if ever have rollover minutes. I am paying a $20 premium for a service I will never use. With other phones, this is not an issue. Go online, download a phone utility(or instructions), unlock it, and pop in your favorite sim card. But I think a few of the features of the iPhone will only work with cingular. Visual VoiceMail being the most obvious, as something like that requires a fairly large infrastructure change on Cingulars part.

Expandable Memory

To be fair, I see a little slot on the side of the phone that COULD be used for expandable memory. But nothing was mentioned about support. Photo’s are another killer app for the iPhone. Why can’t I pop my SD card out of my camera, drop them to my iPhone, and email them out? 2 Megapixels isn’t enough for a lot of people.

Battery

An internal battery on a phone? Palm tried that with the Treo 600, we all know how that worked out. Having worked in cell phone warranty/support I can not tell you how many issues were solved by removing the battery and reinserting it(also knows as second level reset, or a hard shock, or one of a hundred other terms used). iPod battery inside, phone battery outside(if they are seperate) would be an ideal configuration. On the contrary though an internal battery does make for a more solid feeling product. But practically I don’t think it is a good thing.

In the end? I will still get one. I might wait for Rev. 2. I might not. I am pretty impatient. Hopefully enough people will complain and allow third party development on the phone. Which would let me overlook the rest of the downfalls. I also give Apple a lot of slack on these downfalls, because they are new to the phone market. There is only so much you can learn from research and surveys. A lot of people don’t even know that they want to run third party desktop class applications on thier phone, but they do. Apple also has another 5 months to finalize this product. I am 100% positive that we have not seen a final product because there were so many standard phone features that were not mentioned. Does it vibrate? What kind of ringtones does it support? How many contacts can you have? MMS as well as SMS? Will it run current java phone applications? What kind of utilities does it have(calculator, alarm, chrono, etc)?

So it finally happened. I remember the day I put my email address in at WordPress.com before anyone even knew what it was going to be used for, when it was first announced. When I finally found out what it was I couldn’t wait to get an invite to WordPress.com. Well a few days ago I finally got my Golden Ticket in my Inbox.

As most of you may know, new WordPress.com users get a single invite to give away to someone that they deem worthy of such an honor. Seeing as how I know so many people who deserve such an honor to be bestowed upon them, I am taking a cue from Matt and offering my invite to the person who can convince me best that they deserve it. However, I will be accepting bribes of the geek oriented nature :P But if someone comes up with a good reason why they deserve a WordPress.com invite, they will surely receive mine.

Oh, and my WordPress.com blog is located at http://bobb.wordpress.com, although there is absolutely nothing there right now.

So I am at work with no work to do. Bored out of my skull, I remember that I emailed myself sol.exe a few days ago! So I have been playing solitaire off and on for about 3 hours in the “Draw Three” mode because as my mom pointed out the other day, “Draw One” is for n00bs … keep in mind she didn’t actually say ‘n00bs.’ Well, after about 3 hours of playing and not winning once because Draw Three sucks ass, I finally am about to win a game, or so I think!

I’m to the point where I am pulling stuff down from the top so I can clear out the deck, almost finished with that and *BAM* …

After about 20 minutes of sulking I realized how retarded I am and won the game! Move the 3 of hearts and the 2 of clubs over to the 4 of clubs, move the 4 of spades up to its pile and move the 5 of spades from the deck. And it only took me 20 minutes to figure out!

Had some downtime there this afternoon. My host apparently had to give up a range of IP’s I happened to be on and had to update everything to run off that IP, if you notice anything broken or pointing to the wrong place let me know and I will get it fixed ASAP.

On another note I went out today after work to The Other Side Cafe in Boston at Newbury at Mass Ave in Boston. I got to say I think this is the closest I will find to a replacement for “The Cafe” here in Boston. One bonus is this place has a beer and wine license and serve all sorts of eccentric beers. That will come in handy once I turn 21 for sure :) They also have some of the best sandwhiches in town in addition to some very good caffeinated beverages. I had an Ice Blended Mocha Espresso Tripple Shot, and it was only $4.00! Anyone else from boston been to this place? It’s definately more a place for young people(18-30 or so) but i’ms ure anyone would be more than welcome if you don’t mind a bunch of kids :P

I’m really hapy I found that place as I have been very bored thus far and need a place to go and meet some people! We shall see how that goes, but for now … I’m still bored as hell!

No, this is not about the nano, although that is a very cool new little gadget :) This is basically what I *WANT* Apple to release next, or at least sometime in the near future. Honestly anyone could come out with a device like this, but I think Apple would do the best job. So here it goes …

Processor: Appoximately a 1ghz g4 or the intel equivalent, whatever generates less heat
RAM: 512-1024MB of DDR2 uber fast RAM
Storage: 40-100GB 2.5″ HD
Dimensions: About the size of a paperback book
Screen Size: 7″ 16×9 aspect ratio LCD/OLED/Whatever Touchscreen
Resolution: 800×500
Optical Drive: 16x DVD reader
Other: 802.11 b/g wireless
Bluetooth 2.0
Multi-Format Memory Card Reader
Price: Less than $1000

As you might be able to tell from the specs, this gadget is basically a convergence of a PDA, Laptop, and PVP(Portable Vidio Player). It will run a new, scaled down, pen-driven version of OSX, and I stress pen-driven. This device will have nothing but a power button, and an eject button for the DVD-ROM and Media Card reader. The OS will be fairly seemless to applications, allowing you to run any standard OSX application using hand writing recognition which is done by the OS in a layer between input and the application. The device would have a small section dedicated to stylus input that mimic’d the texture and feel of writing on a piece of paper. The huge problems I have had with hand recognition stuff is that the surface you write on, usually an LCD touchscreen, is to slippery and makes for jagged, hard to read hand writing. The price is something thats difficult to determine I think. Its obviously going to be more than your standard PDA of today, but it has to be less than the low end laptops of today as well, seeing that the specs on it just don’t compare.

Now alot of you might be saying “What?! No miniaturized and hard to use QWERTY keyboard?!” I think in this day and age we should be beyond something like that. And honestly, think about what you would use a device like this for ..

Playing Video

PIM functions

Web Browsing

None of those functions really requires a keyboard. Keeping an address book and schedule? We have been doing this on pen and paper for the longest time until only a few years ago. We can write a whole lot faster than we can type on a mini keyboard. A few things you would want to use this device for you would generally have a keyboard for, but thats where the handwriting recognition software comes in. Writing E-Mail for example. This would *NOT* be a device for word processing, or making phone calls, or any of that jazz.

I have also left off a CD Burner because lets face it, your average person to use this device won’t be carrying around extra CD-R’s with him. It’s also really not needed I don’t think and produces unwanted extra heat. Ideally we would completely do away with the CD-ROM and just use solid state memory, but we aren’t to that point yet and I want this now! LOL

My goal is to have 2 lightweight devices in my pockets. One would be a cell phone which made phone calls and was good at it … that is all a phone needs to do! The other would be an MP3 player, that only played music. Then there would be this device which rolls the other 3 devices needed to complete a portable computing arsenal into one fairly lightweight, managably sized, easy to use device.

Obviously the technology is a little ways off on something like this, but I don’t doubt that something along these lines will come out eventually. Until then, I shall daydream of such a device that will solve all of my portable computing problems.

As some of you might be aware, a few months ago I received a free iPod shuffle from the Gratis network. As i’m sure most of you know, apple just released a new iPod, the iPod Nano. I checked http://freeipodnanos.com yesterday right after I heard about the announcement and it was registered but didn’t have anything on thier site yet. This morning I woke up and checked it and in less than 24 hours the Gratis network was giving away free iPod Nano’s!

So naturally the first thing I did was sign up for it. Upon lookin for a referral link online to help someone else out, I could not find any referral links for it yet! I concluded that no one must know about this yet so I went to digg and posted an article. Now, I know I am probably going to get some flaming for posting my referral link on there, but I think that as the first person to notice this and post it out there for people I should be just fine posting that. Oh well, I will take the bad and the good as thats how the internet goes. BTW, after it being posted for about 2 minutes I already had someone chewing me out, the story isn’t ven popular yet and people are flaming me about it! Geez!
