Tribe Wanted

Tribe Wanted is a very cool social experiment taking place on a little island in Fiji. Apparently someone wanted to build a hotel there and pretty much take over the island. Someone offered up the money to not have the hotel be built there. They are trying to save the island and offering memberships to the tribe. There are only 5000 spots available.

There are 3 different types of memberships. Nomad, Hunter, and Warrior. A Nomad membership gives you a 1 year renewable(once) membership in the tribe and a 7 night stay on the island including travel from the local airport to the island. You still have to get to and back from Fiji yourself. The Hunter membership provides a 2 year membership and a 14 Night stay. The Warrior membership gives 3 years in the tribe and 21 nights on the island.

The prices to join the tribe are very affordable. $220 for the Noman membership, $440 for the Hunter membership, and $660 for the Warrior membership. The cheapest plane ticket I could find to Fiji was around $1000, so $1700 for a 3 week vacation in Fiji, plus a 3 year membership to the tribe, giving you a say in anything that happens within the tribe for the entirety of your membership.

This social experiment has it’s up sides and it’s down sides. On the plus side, the island is not being taken over by a hotel, YOU can join the tribe and have a say in what happens. On the downside, anyone can join and have a say in what happens. Some people may have the opinion that this is a bad thing for the local area, but I don’t think it can be worse than the hotel.

I just got my tax return and am so very tempted to purchase a membership, in the hopes that I will be able to afford a ticket before my membership is up. I think this would be one hell of an experience. Plus I have always wanted to go to Fiji. Unfortunately I am not at a point where this is a viable risk to take, there are so many other things I could spend that money on.

  • Welcome to Lord of the Flies! Are these guys former ENRON-employees or have they just read about the South Sea Bubble? If so, they’re attempting to go one better. After all, 5000 members at $288 a year membership over 3 years equals $4,320,000 – that’s serious money! What do the suckers (“tribe members”) get for it? Free use of a drop-latrine and they are allowed to build their own shelter. Why didn’t I think of this? But the, it’s so obscenely clever that it takes a pretty twisted mind – not to mention the assortment of twisted minds that are going to join them. By comparison, THE BEACH will appear like a boyscouts’ meet.

PS it seems they have already signed up 800 suckers. That’s at the very least (i.e. one-year membership) $230,400. Enough to make a bolt for South America? Or should they pay their U.K. income tax first? Or is that the Fijian income tax?
