Google has come up with a new idea not to eliminate comment spam, but to make it useless. As i’m sure you know comment spammers spam so that they can increase thier search rankings. Google developed a new rel tag that thier search engine will not follow if it see’s it. When thier bot see’s a link with rel=’nofollow’ it will simply ignore the link and not spider it. They are suggesting that everyone put this code anywhere that a user can put a link on your site. Meaning that whenever someone leaves a legitimate comment, they will not gain on google from posting thier URL. It seems unfair, but this may be the price we have to pay for getting rid of comment spam. Currently I use Spam Karma and have had no problems with spam since I installed it. A few legit comments have been moderated, but only because they used bogus info. You can read the entire Google post at Google’s Blog.
